The greens then creep higher to the majestic forests that generously cloak the surrounding lands and beyond crowned by the snowy Alps of the Sierra range. Whether you are outdoors to go hiking, camping or backpacking; experience back-country in the most picturesque way… experience Tuolumne Meadows.
It’s no wonder how Tuolumne Meadows has become among the most popular spots in the Yosemite National Park. This gentle, meadowy acreage that stretches nearly two miles lies at the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada where a portion the beautiful Tuolumne River winds through. High country, its lowest point reaches an altitude of 8,500 and soars at a 10,000 foot elevation around Yosemite’s east entrance at Tioga Pass.
Considered as an ideal base for day hiking, exploring Tuolumne Meadows would surely prove blissful. With its easy slope, enjoying a leisurely stroll north or south holds an array of various landscapes for you to take in. Though a popular site, the vastness of the land known to be Sierra Nevada’s largest sub-alpine meadow creates an intimate solitude making it very easy for you to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds, and the peaceful vibe only nature can provide.
Tuolumne Meadows is a host to many backpacking trail heads including the primary route to Mount Lyell which is the highest peak in Yosemite National Park. Famous long-distance trails such as the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail also run through this area. And after an adventure-filled day, the area offers various camping sites to crash in from an assembly of canvas tent cabins just off Tioga Road and within the meadow to the nearby high-altitude backcountry camps at the High Sierra.
Summer and springs are popular for the spectacular mountain range sceneries that are made all the more breathtaking by the peppering of wildlife and the wide variety of striking wildflower blooms. But even on snowy months, Tuolumne Meadows remain popular for the excellent winter mountaineering the area offers. Other activities and essential amenities to enjoy include biking, rock climbing, guided trips on foot or horse-back, a small automated gas station, convenience store, and a grill at the east end of the meadow.
